"Coming from a successful musical family — her dad is R&B songwriter and producer Phil Hurtt — has given acoustic soul artist Sierra Hurtt the impetus to try things her own way. Stranger, her first full-length (due out April 10), doesn't sound a bit like any other record, but takes inspiration from all over the map. Reggae with resonator guitar over layered voices, delicate and sweet but not cloying — then add glockenspiel? Why not? Hurtt makes it work. "Ties That Bind" is the tenderest thing imaginable, a softly aching a cappella track where the despair is palpable.
